Great laptop. The 8 sec boot into WEB is great for airport emails & surfing etc. Also sufficient power/ memory to run a complete 3 tier PeopleSoft 9.1 VM including Oracle database. Good compromise between small and lightweight for travel and a full blown desktop for heavy hitting database apps.

Screen is very clear. Long battery life, just keeps going. Nice touches with the switchable graphics card and auto boost of the overclocking CPU. Why don't the others do this trick - very sweet.

Improvements?

8 gig ram.

Solid state disk with USB 3.0 drive for apps.

Better customer support (email not answered after 6 weeks).

Remove crapware being installed - allow a user option upon first boot to install or not. Removing this unwanted software is a pain!

Spent a ridiculous amount of time researching computers (I mean RIDICULOUS as in many months). Found this one and really liked its specs. I wanted something small and light, not too expensive and with full capability (not a netbook).

This machine has just about everything and for a great price. Would have like to see bluetooth and a higher resoulution camera, but in the end couldn't see holding out when it included 4gb DDR3, 500 GB harddrive, Core 2 Duo processor (7300) and 10 hours plus of battery power.

I was irritated by having to spend a couple of hours making back up discs for windows and a bunch of updates to Windows 7, but I think that was more because I had just set my wife's macbook up and it was so easy. That said, I need a PC for work and again, this machine was alot cheaper!

Like the form factor. Had tried a netbook and did not like the smaller 10inch screens or 92% keyboard. Almost bought the new Acer 11 inch timeline, but then noticed the keyboard is not standard. We have some computers that have odd "enter" keys and I knew this would drive me crazy. This keyboard is great.

I bought this computer about a month-and-a-half ago and I think it is one of the best purchases I have ever made. I bought it because (a) my kids have started using our computers and I wanted an extra laptop and (b) I wanted a computer that I could take on the Metro (DC Subway) with me, so I could work on my way to work.

My kids are really happy with the computer and it has turned out to be so much better than I imagined. It's really portable and easy to use, so now I can work anywhere! This is great for me because I waste a lot of time commuting, I work a lot of hours, and I work out every day too.

It is incredibly light. I can actually work holding it in one hand and work out on a stationary bike at the same time.

It's also really durable. I put it its sleeve in my backpack every morning and ride my bike to the metro (the DC subway). It doesn't weigh me down at all and--despite the heavy bike lock in my backpack-- the computer doesn't look the slightest bit worn. I have another laptop, but it has been impossible for me to take on my bike and I don't like to take it in a laptop bag because it is really heavy and I am afraid it will break.

I haven't really noticed that the Eee is any slower than any of my other computers either (I also have a desktop Mac) and I have not run out of storage space on the hard drive. I have the 4G version. You can also use sd cards, like you would use in a digital camera or a cell phone, to increase the computer's storage capacity.

Using Linux is also a lot easier than I thought. I actually installed Linux on both of my other computers shortly after I got the Eee. There is definitely some software you can't get on Linux, but the flexibility that Linux has as an open source operating system makes it work giving up a little Windows software. If there is a Windows app you can't give up, then there is an application, Wine, that will play a lot of Windows programs on a Linux system. You can check out the Wine homepage to find out if a Windows app will work on Wine: www.winehq.org.

I don't currently have the Eee version of Linux on my computer. I installed Linux Mint because it is easier to modify and add new software to. If you want to install another operating system on the Eee, then you will probably have to use a usb thumb drive. There are instructions explaining how to do this on www.pendrivelinux.com.

There are a few downsides to the Eee though, it is really small, it can get a bit hot, and the battery doesn't last more than a couple hours. First, people are correct when they say it is small. I would not try to use this as a substitute for a large computer if I was going to need to use programs requiring a lot of screen space. It was a bit difficult to type with at first, but I have gotten used to the keyboard layout now. If you really wanted, you could probably hook up a usb keyboard to the Eee and plug in a monitor (there is a plug for it). Then it might serve as an adequate substitute for a desktop.

Second, it does get hot if you leave it turned on and put it in its sleeve. I don't think it's hot enough to be concerned about though.

Third, the battery does not last as long as I would like (under two hours). I am not sure if this is only since I have installed the Mint operating system.

So, the long and short of it is that the Eee is great in terms of portability, the Linux operating system that comes on the Eee is easy to use (and it works well with Linux Mint, which is even easier to use), and it is pretty darn fast. If you are looking for a desktop substitute though, I would give it some extra thought before buying an Eee.

I have always had notebooks, several different major brands, and lugged them around airports and Europe.
Then I saw a fella with one of these in an aiport, looked good, and I ordered it. I'll never go back to another laptop. This does everything I ever did with a Windows machine, and just as fast. 512k seems like the 3 gigs on a Windows computer. For surfing the web, reading emails, speadsheets, word processing, and so on, save yourself the Windows headaches and get this liitle gem, and get it cheap!!!

Little laptop, big features, June 25, 2008

I bought the Linux version and after playing with it for a little while I booted from an external floppy drive with a Windows 98 boot disk, deltreed the Linux partitions, rebooted and fdisked and formatted the 4 GB C: drive and then used an external DVD drive to install XP Pro using an nLite custom slimmed down version. I also installed Office 2003. For $43 I bought a 2 GB RAM stick and replaced the 1 GB that came with it. I also bought a 16 GB SD card for $45 online to give additional storage.

Comments from observers: "Is that a toy computer?" No...it is full-featured and lots of power. I like the Asus 900 EEE weight factor as my primary laptop is a Dell Precision M6300 that is huge. My wishes for improvement: WiMax and Bluetooth so I'll probably get the new versions and this one may get passed on to a relative.
The lack of a CD drive is not critical here to me, but some may find it limiting. External DVD drives are cheap though. The onboard Atheros wireless chip is good in the room the router is in, but range is less or even impossible through walls that many larger laptop wifi chips would connect. I have a cheap external USB wifi thumb device that I use when the router range is beyond the internal chip. Three USB ports are nice...I have a USB mouse, but would prefer Bluetooth capability to save even that port use.
All in all I think most people will find it a great ultra portable as long as they realize battery life is less than three hours (which is about like most regular laptops). There are heavier third-party batteries that can deliver much longer usage and I would never buy the standard 4-cell battery at the prices I have seen. The newer models promise much greater battery life and bigger SSD capacity so Asus has a winner indeed. Get ultra portables down to VCR prices in five or less years and we'll have one in every classroom student's hands in America. That's a multi-billion dollar market even at $100 a unit.
